RAAC (Reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete)

Design and Cost Construction carry out structural strengthening to help support RAAC panels with the NHS. Working closely with structural engineers, suppliers, and the trust, we have completed a large number of phases and lots of different details.

We fix steel angles to the concrete ring beam in 1200mm section, then install back-to-back Unistruts at 100mm intervals, bolted to the steel angle. These back-to-backs are up tight to the RAAC and act as a crash deck. If any panel fails, they stay intact. In this detail, the Unistruts are running in the same direction as the panel, there are 5 full-length Unistruts on each panel.

This detail applies when there are existing steel channels in place. The back-to-back Unistruts in this detail run in the opposite direction as the panel, they are fixed to the existing steel channels, braced and bolted. The Unistruts here are fixed at 450mm centres. A shallow section of Unistrut is fixed to the back-to-back to allow the struts to pass the flange of the steel and be up tight to the panel.

This detail is a steel solution for larger sections and spans. Steel angles are bolted to the wall, and brackets are installed and fixed to the concrete ring beam and also to the steel.
